Publishing Powerpoint in Moodle

Publishing a PowerPoint slideshow from GoogleDocs to a Moodle course
  • With Google Presentor can import your powerpoint files into GoogleDocs, and then by following this tutorial, you can publish these presentations into your Moodle course. The process is a little tricky, but has these benefits:
  • You can edit the document online, and have it be updated in your Moodle course.
  • Your students can view the presentation without having to download any plug-ins, or have Powerpoint installed
  • Many teachers struggle with various methods to convert PowerPoint to a format that is easy for their students to view, and Google Docs is one free way to solve this problem.
To get started, upload the Powerpoint file to your GoogleDocs by clicking the Upload button

and locating the Powerpoint file on your computer.
The select the file, and click the "Open" button:
This will start the upload process. Depending on the file size and your network connection, this may take a little time.
Once the presentation has been uploaded, it will show up in your GoogleDocs:
You can click the file to edit in Google Presentations or to publish it to Moodle.

To publish the file, click the Publish button. This opens up a notification screen, and now you can click the Publish document to actually publish the document. This opens up the "Publish this document" screen.

Here you can preview the document, and decide what size to display it at. Of course you need to make sure that the presentation is still understandable at the smaller size. If it is not, you can edit to make text, etc. larger, and re-publish it, or select a larger presentation size.
For this tutorial, I've selected the "Medium 555px" size.
Now there are two ways to put this presentation in your Moodle course, a simple way, and a bit more tricky way.

The simple way is the same as in the previous tutorial, just copy the document link and paste into a Moodle resource. This works fine, but presents the file in a pop-up window. Perhaps you would prefer to embed the presentation in a resource, so that you can add notes, etc.
To embed the file, you will have to use the 'iframe' code provided by Google:
Select the iframe code and copy it.

Then open the Moodle course, and turn editing on, and then choose Compose a Webpage, from the "Add a resource..." drop down.


On compose a web page screen, give the file a name.



Then down past the optional summary in the content field, turn the the code view on


In code view, paste the iframe code.


Then turn code view back on. The code view disapears.



Click Save and view course. Now you can see the presentation in the course as shown below.
Students can now click the Presentation, and view it. Using the iframe method enables you to embed the Presentation in other Moodle activities.
For instance, you could embed multiple presentations in a Moodle Lesson:

Using Google Docs with Moodle

Google Docs-Moodle tutorial Google Docs provides an online office system that includes Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations. This can be used as an online content system for publishing content in Moodle by following the steps in this tutorial. This tutorial is mainly for folks who currently publish web pages and then link to them from within their Moodle system.
1) To start, sign up for a Gmail account, if you haven't already. Then click on Documents link in your Gmail account. This takes you to the Google Docs screen.
2. If you have not created a document, create a new document in Google Docs by clicking the "New:Document" menu.
3) Save your document by clicking the Save button. Click a saved document to open it.
4) Click the Share document to publish the document. Choose the "Publish as web page..." option. This will publish the document to anyone on the internet, if they know the address of the document.
5) When you click the Publish as web page link, Google Docs brings you to the screen below. Here you have two main options for the purpose of this tutorial:
  1. You can publish the document,
  2. and you can choose to have the published document re-published when you make changes to it.

The last is particularly handy for your course files that you may want to update or correct, such as a syllabus, etc.

5) Click "Publish document" to publish the document.

Now Google Docs shows you the unique link to the document you have just published.
6) To add the file to your Moodle course, you will just link the document to a Moodle resource. To do this you must first copy the link to the document to your clipboard. If you are using Windows, you can right click on the link, and then choose "Copy Shortcut".
7) Now go into your Moodle course (folks who do not yet have Moodle can try this at demo.moodle.org, you can also download and install Moodle on your computer by using the packages here http://download.moodle.org/windows), click "Turn editing on", go to the section where you would like to add the link to the Google Docs file, and choose "Link to file or web site" from the "Add a resource" drop down menu.
8) Give the resource a name, and then scroll down to the "Location" field. Paste the shortcut into the Location field. On Windows you can right-click and choose "Paste".
9) Once the link has been pasted into the Location field in Moodle,
scroll down to the "Window" dialogue, and for this tutorial choose "New window". This will display a link in your course that your students can click to view the document.
10) Scroll down to the "Save and return to course" button, and click it.
Now you can click the "Google Tutorial" link (the link name will be the name you entered in step 8 above), and view the file. If you have chosen to show the file to students in step 9 above, your students will also be able to see the file.
By following the steps above, you can share a document file from Google documents. In subsequent tutorials, I'll discuss how to add Google Presentations and Spreadsheets to Moodle.
Showing the file later if you chose to hide it above: If the file is not visible to students, the 'eye' icon will be closed and the name of the file will be grayed out.
To make the file visible to students, click the shut eye icon:
Of course you can also choose the edit icon (1) to return to the editing screen, and then choose "Show" from the Visible menu.
Other icons are the Move icon (2), which you can use to move the link to the file to a different position in your course, and the delete icon (3) which will remove the link to the file in your course (but not the file on Google Docs).
Summary:
There are many Advanced options in Moodle, which you can view by clicking the "Show Advanced" button. A good place to experiment with these settings is on demo.moodle.org. In the "Common module settings" box, make sure "Visible" is set to "Show" if you want your students to see the file (files can be hidden from students in Moodle by choosing "Hide" here, though this won't change the "Publish" settings in Google Docs). Note that Moodle contains numerous "Help" links (the buttons with the ? on them), you can click these to view more information about a particular setting in Moodle.

How to on Maximum upload size

One of the most frequent problems in Moodle is setting limit for upload files. Sometimes it depends on settings on your webserver and we should cover these settings here.

Many teachers and students faced to bothersome warning when they tried to upload some material to Moodle course. Teachers can try to zip their materials before they try to upload them to course and there Moodle can unzip them for teachers. Teacher also should look for upload size limit in Course settings, because Moodle allow different limit for every course.



But if there is only some small value and teacher want upload bigger files, he have to ask administrator to set the limit higher.

First thing Moodle administrator should check is main upload limit settings for whole site in Site Administration > Site policies.



As you may see on the picture, there is set 0 for maxbytes value. This means no limit. But only no limit meant from moodle administrator. Administrator might want to limit users to disallow them upload too large files (due some bandwidth problems, not enough harddisk place etc.) So administrator should check this place, if it doesn't contain some unwanted limit.

But you may see i highlighted two anothers words. post_max_size and upload_max_filesize. These settings are true limit holders, beyond them even administrator cannot set Moodle upload limit higher, even if he set no limit.

These settings are given by your server php.ini file. If you are admin of your webserver where you run Moodle you might change them by yourself. Or just ask person with root rights for your server to change them for you.

You might be asking, what are these two variables about. So upload_max_filesize is a max limit of uploaded files. You might upload more than one file with single form on another websites, but this is not Moodle case, i think there is only one input of file type everywhere. (You can upload how many files you want, i meant you may upload only one file by one submitting of the form.)

post_max_size is limiting how much posted data can your script digest. So some additional data might be added to file size of uploaded file. You should therefore set slightly higher value in post_max_size than upload_max_filesize.


Don't forget to restart your webserver, after you alter higher mentioned variables!!

There is another way if you don't have root access to your webserver and php.ini file (on some servers there are more than one php.ini file, you will find which one to modify when you will run yourmoodle/admin/phpinfo.php in browser - here you can find very useful information about settings on your server. post_max_size and upload_max_filesize are mentioned here too!



You may try to create special file .htaccess (there is really no extension, trust me ;-) ) with lines

php_value post_max_size 22M
php_value upload_max_filesize 20M

And place it to root directory of your moodle. (Right there where is config.php of your moodle located). If you encounter some error, delete this file. This error means your server is not allowing you to alter settings with .htaccess files (it's for security reason and you will have to ask server administrator to help you solve upload file size problem).

I know today's post seamed little too difficult. If you are lucky and you have some person who is taking care of your webserver, just ask him politely to set these variables for you, he might know better what he should do ;-). About Bandwidth

Internet bandwidth is, in simple terms, the transmission speed or throughput of your connection to the Internet. However, measuring bandwidth can be tricky, since the lowest bandwidth point between your computer and the site you're looking at determines the effective transmission speed at any moment.

Three factors outside of your computer control how quickly you can view Web pages:

The Internet bandwidth between your computer and the site you're viewing.

The round-trip time between your computer and the site you're viewing.

The response time of the site you're viewing.

The tests referenced on this page address the first issue, and measure the Internet bandwidth between your computer and My Pc Center's servers. We also have tests that can measure the round-trip time between your computer and seven different sites on the Internet, here. Of course, the response time of our site will always be wonderful...:) (If not, we'll tell you on the home page.)

Tests: Download vs. Upload
The differences between our Download and Upload tests aren't as obvious as they may initially seem. Yes, the basic difference is the direction of the data transfer: Simply put, the Download test measures your connection speed for viewing Web pages; the upload test measures the speed for maintaining them--or sending data over your connection.

However, the rated upload and download speeds may not be the same for your connection. Some connections, such as 33K and lower, are "symmetric," meaning the rated upload and download times should be the same. Other connections, such as cable modems and ADSL, are "asymmetric" (the "A" in ADSL stands for asymmetric). This means the upload and download times won't necessarily be the same; upload times are generally not as fast as download times. For instance, the rated speeds for ADSL are 1.4Mbps down, and 400Kbps up. Cable modems are typically rated at 1.5 to 3Mbps down, and 400 to 600Kbps up.

Occasionally, you may even see opposite results, especially on cable modems during the evening hours. If your connection has a heavy user load, the download times may suffer, while the upload times remain unchanged. This is because the majority of Internet users download data instead of uploading it.

In addition, the ways we actually conduct the tests aren't quite comparable. Our Download test uses the http protocol and grabs one big stream of data. Our upload test uses the ftp protocol, which involves a lot of handshaking across Internet servers. As a result, the test is more susceptible to interruptions because of bad ping times on a server or servers.

Bottom line: You should regularly run both tests to make sure you're getting the rated upload and download speeds from your connection.

About throughput and reproducibility
The Internet changes from one moment to the next in ways that are impossible to predict. You cannot expect to see the same bandwidth value every time you measure it. Furthermore, you cannot expect to see the full nominal speed of your connection for your bandwidth measurement: There are always delays somewhere. As a rule of thumb, if you can measure throughput that is 85% of your nominal bandwidth, more often than not your connection is performing at par. (You may need to contact your service provider or modem manufacturer to determine the rated speed of your connection and/or modem.)

This is especially true with modems. Most 56Kbps modems connect at a speed less than 46Kbps, because of the limitations of analog phone lines and telephone company switches.

To get the best picture of your Internet bandwidth, test several times. Also test at different times of the day: Your bandwidth measurement at 7 AM may be much better than your bandwidth measurement at 10 PM.

About bandwidth units
You will often see bandwidth and transfer speed quoted in two different units: kilobits per second, abbreviated kbps or Kb/s, and kilobytes per second, abbreviated KB/s. The difference between the two units is the number of bits in a byte, which is 8. The small 'b' stands for bits, and the big 'B' stands for bytes. Transfer speeds are often shown in KB/s, and connect speeds are usually quoted in Kb/s.

So, for instance, if a progress dialog for a modem shows you a download speed of 4.3 KB/s, it is the same as 34.4 Kb/s. If a progress dialog for a cable modem shows you a transfer speed of 100 KB/s, it is the same as 800 Kb/s.

We display our measured transfer speeds in Kb/s, to make them easier to compare with your rated line speed.

About bandwidth and modems
Bandwidth over a modem connection can sometimes be difficult to understand. There are two connections to a modem: one from your computer to its modem, and one from the computer's modem to the ISP's modem.

The connection speed between the computer and its modem (called the Maximum speed under Control Panel/Modem/General tab/Properties) should be set as high as possible without causing errors. On most computers this is 115200, also written as 115.2 Kb/s.

The connection speed between your modem and the ISP's, and the compression and error checking, are negotiated between the two modems when they establish the call. In the very best possible case, which is rarely seen, two V.90 (56 Kb/s) modems will be able to connect at 53 Kb/s with compression, and the compression on normal text transfer will average 50%, giving an effective transmission rate of 106 Kb/s. Very highly compressible material could be transferred at the maximum rate of 115.2 Kb/s. Incompressible material like ZIP files could be transferred at a maximum rate of 53 Kb/s.

Our download test transmits an incompressible block of random text. The theoretical maximum transfer speed for this over a V.90 modem is 53 Kb/s, if there was no latency at all on the line--that is, if there was no delay between the times your computer asked for a packet, our computer sent it, and your computer received it. With normal latency, however, transfer speeds are reduced to roughly 85% of the maximum, which for a V.90 modem would be about 45 Kb/s. If your modem connects to your ISP at the more typical 44 Kb/s, then you can expect our test to report about 37 Kb/s on a connection with normal latency.
